Jets Late Pressure Kills ‘Cats Hope For A Win
After taking an eight goal win from the previous night, Swindon headed to Slough last Sunday looking to capitalise on a huge confidence booster with a chance of more points from the weekend’s games. Although the Jets currently sit second in the league, Swindon took the ice at the hanger and after holding out for fifteen minutes, they then took their chance to grab the first goal of the night. A powerplay opportunity lead to Latvian import Raimonds Danilics breaking the deadlock against the rival side and with only five minutes left in the period, things were looking positive for Swindon. Swindon headed into the locker room with the lead from here however at 1-0, the game was still very much open for both teams with two more periods of play. The Wildcats nearly doubled their lead early into the second, however after seeing a goal disallowed at 21:05, it would be the home side who would then find the net next. Just under half way through and Slough’s Slava Koulikov equalised on the powerplay to bring his side back into the game with another thirty minutes of play left in the game. Two minutes and Swindon then scored a replying goal, this time through Canadian forward Jason Cassells. After deflecting a point shot from Raimonds Danilics, Jets’ Rockman could only see the puck pass him by after Cassells poked the puck home from close range. Being a team sitting in second, Slough were quick to get on the offense and at 34:51, ex Wildcat Ciaran Long capitalised on an overlap play to tie the game at 2-2. This was the last major play of the period and both sides headed off, matched both in play and on the score board after two periods. The final period took a while to open and after five minutes of play neither side could find that next goal to divide the two of them. At 46:50 however that goal did arrive and to the joy of the home team, through Slovenian forward Blaz Emersic. His shot was able to sneak its way around the post and with it, past ‘Cats netminder Douglas who saw his team give up the lead for the third time that night. Unfortunately for Swindon, things then took a turn for the worst when the cruellest of deflections saw the puck tip past netminder Douglas off of fellow team mate Joe Baird for Slough’s fourth of the game. To end any hopes of a comeback, Jet’s Peter Poljacek then added a final goal before the end of the period to finish the scoring at 5-2 after three periods of play. Although playing some good hockey and challenging one of the top sides in the league, Swindon were unfortunate to not able to take anything away from the night’s game and now head into next weekend when they have two home fixtures arranged. The ‘Cats will face Guildford this Saturday before again playing Slough on Sunday, this time on home ice. This weekend is lining up for one not to be missed for any Wildcat fan and as an extra incentive, Swindon will also be offering a BOGOF feature for the Sunday game when they look to attract the biggest crowd yet!
