EPL Weekly Roundup week 35 – w/e midnight Sunday15th May 2011 – The Iceman
Wednesday, 18 May 2011 13:19

What a difference a day, er, week makes with lots going on although it has to be said plenty of speculation and hearsay. So although bearing in mind what my old grand-pappy used to advise in such circumstances: You don’t walk across a field in bare feet in the dark unless you can see where you are treading, and leaving out some of the more imaginative rumours we proceed with some, but not too much, caution because after all we all need gossip at this mid-seasons point.

First off, though, on safe ground came the announcement David Savage, who ended last season as an EPL Top Ten D-men placing, has re-signed for the Flames for an eighth season, and yet still only 22 years of age. And I thought it was only policemen who looked so much younger these days! Meanwhile, ex-Flames captain Rob Lamey signed on with the Bees.

The Bees also featured in the news with Greg Randall who after eighteen years, mainly with the Lightning and more recently in Bracknell, signed for the Phantoms. But that’s not all. While few must have been expecting Dangerous Brothers Jaroslav Cesky and Michal Pinc to return to the Bees, the first snippet of information of their whereabouts was that they had signed for an ‘unnamed EPL side.’

All very mysterious and while that ruled out a return to Bracknell it may have come as a bit of a surprise when the Wildcats revealed they had accepted the pair of Czech forwards. Pinc finished the season in the EPL Top Ten Points, Goals and Assists Chart while Cesky had the year previously and was only inches short again last season. And here we come to our first rumour. While Bees’ mercurial British forward Nicky Watt played some of his best hockey with the Czech duo, can the whisper he is returning to Swindon also be true?

Sticking with the Wildcats, who also announced the re-signing of Czech Jan Melichar which took their foreign contingent to three and raised the question about the futures of Slovakian Jozef Liska and Lithuanian Edigijus Bauba. Best that can be said is their prospects must be looking a lot rosier other than in Swindon. And what about Jonas Höög, who in a short-season leapt into the EPL Top Ten Game Average Chart?

While on the subject of Wildcats’ speculation, have you heard the one about Cairan Long returning from the Bison and Sam Bullas leaving for the Tigers? No, then I won’t mention those.

Now for goodness sake let’s get back on firmer ground and mention of the Bison raises the matter of the departure of D-man Rick Skene in favour of the Phantoms while captain Nicky Chinn, who at 38 is still a British Top Ten Points Chart entry, is to captain the side for a second term.  Ben Davies, however, the GB Under 18 and Under 20 forward who after a year with the Basingstoke side after several years with Cardiff, has returned to his native Wales.

Enough of this safe ground, let’s have some more mystery. Canadian netminder Greg Blais who last season played for Meudon in France and whose name has been linked to a couple of British clubs has, according to his agent, signed for an ‘unnamed EPL side’. Oo ahh!  Hmmm. Another import between the pipes which from the experience of recent years means, apart from say Sheffield’s Pasi Raitanen, a short EPL career then.

Meanwhile, Juraj Senko, the Slovakian D-man who played for Solway Sharks last season is also reported to have been signed by an ‘unnamed EPL side.’  Oh, the suspense!

Now we come to the ‘read between the lines’ section with the enigmatic report from the Steeldogs that Coach Payette has signed an agreement with, oh yes, another unnamed team that will allow his ‘home-grown’ players to train and ice in mid-week games for an Elite League side but which is not the local Steelers. Payette said various arrangements with their neighbours had never really worked satisfactorily, so apart from some extra travelling this looks like a terrific opportunity for some of his lads. And while we are on the magical mystery tour how about the unconfirmed report Tigers’ forward Ashley Calvert is on his way to the Steeldogs?

But let’s not leave the Tigers out because there is another as yet unconfirmed report Thomas Soar, the Nottingham Lions GB Under 18 forward and occasional Phantoms player, is to sign for them.

Lightning? Did someone mention the Lightning? Well, we don’t need to leave them out because there is a report netminder Barry Hollyhead, who ended the season in the Top Ten Netminders Chart, is to sign for the Tigers. And the Tigers, of course, home to Luke Brittle, are so-say about to adopt his brother Stuart from the Steeldogs. Or was the rumour they are both going to Sheffield. Or maybe it was they were both going to Skegness together for their holidays.

Who knows? So lets get into the home straight with some solid stuff and we start with the Lightning again and the news GB Under 20 D-man Tom Norton, who has just played his first full season for Elite League Nottingham after four years with the ENL, has just signed on.

Then there is the Phantoms who signed up veteran Erik Bochna, the Slovakian forward who played some years ago for Swindon and Romford and achieved some decent figures. Also, last years ‘prospect player Connor Pollard signed a 2-way contract with ENL Wightlink to give him more ice time with a view to the Peterborough side having first call on his duties in 2012.

The Phoenix finally got off the mark with their first name to the new roster being that of returning forward Tom Duggan, followed by something of a coup with the capture of top ten British points, goals and assists forward Slava Koulikov from the Jets.

While the Jets may have lost their top Brit, their top import Darius Pliskauskas from Lithuania, who last season was in the EPL Top Ten Goals, Points and Assists Charts, re-signed. However, defenseman Andy Munroe was released and somewhat surprisingly Czech Jan Krajicek who had been lured from the Wildcats and despite being a high-scoring defender in his nine years in British hockey and a Top Ten D-men Chart last season. Surely someone will snap him up?

Oh yes, I lied about finishing on solid stuff because sticking with the Jets rumour has it Josh Bruce, the Tigers’ forward who has played for both Coventry at ENL and IEIHL level, is moving to there.

So a bit of a roller coaster week with some interesting signings which prompted Jets’ coach Pete Russell to comment that from what he had seen so far the EPL is shaping up into an even tougher place to be with more meat and IQ to the lower clubs of last season, which of course can only be a good thing for the league and the sport.

Return Of The Watt!
Tuesday, 17 May 2011 19:32

Return Of The Watt!

Popular forward Nicky Watt will be returning to the Link Centre for the 2011/2012 English Premier League season.

Nicky, who last played for Swindon in the 2008/09 season, returns to Wiltshire having come of the back of two great seasons in Bracknell. Nicky posted 64 points in his first season for the Bees and last season the former Basingstoke Bison player notched 58 points and was one of the standout British players in the league last season.

Nicky had this to say of his move back to Swindon: “I’m really looking forward to coming back to Swindon, it’s a good place to play and the fans are awesome! Ryan is putting a great squad together. We have a great bunch of guys here and a very talented hockey team!"

He then went on to say “A big part of my decision to come back was teaming up with Jaro and Pincy again. They have become good friends and we have a good relationship on the ice.”

Wildcats Head Coach Ryan Aldridge was understandably delighted with his newest recruit: “Nicky brings so much to the table, he sticks up for his team mates and knows the right time to drop the gloves, something I think we lacked last season! “He also puts up good numbers and links up well Cesky and Pinc and I am excited to see them play together in Swindon!

The Wildcats will be announcing further signings in the not too distant future with all information being on www.swindonwildcats.com.

Czech Mates Fly The Nest To Join The Cat’s!

Czech Mates Fly The Nest To Join The Cat’s!

Explosive forward pairing Michal Pinc and Jaroslav Cesky will be strutting their stuff in Swindon colours next season after agreeing terms at the Link Centre.

Both Pinc and Cesky, who played for rivals the Bracknell Bees last season, registered over a point and a half per game  last year with Pinc clocking up 100 points to secure him a place in the English Premier League’s Top Ten Point Scorers. With both players having plenty of experience playing in the EPL, they will be looking to fire Swindon up the league table next season.

Wildcat’s Head Coach Ryan Aldridge had this to say of the double capture: “I am delighted to add Pinc and Cesky to our line up. They are proven players in this league and have put up great numbers over the course of the two seasons they have spent in Bracknell. Last year we signed guys new to the league and as we found out last season it does not matter how strong their CV is, they don’t always work out to be strong players in the EPL. These guys show night in and night out that they can put points on the board and also they both play hard and they play to win every night.”

Import-ant Return
Tuesday, 10 May 2011 12:25

Experienced defenseman Jan Melichar will be back playing in the Swindon Wildcats jersey next season after agreeing to stay at the Wiltshire side for the 2011/2012 season.
Melichar made a huge impact in his first season for Swindon last year, playing an instrumental part in helping Swindon to the playoffs as well as also forming a formidable partnership at the heart of the defence with the recently departed James Griffin. The import will be looking to use his experience to help next year's team climb further up the table as he returns to the lineup for another EPL season.

The man himself had a few words to say on his return: "I am delighted to be returning to what is a wonderful club and a brilliant setup. I really enjoyed my first year here last season and I am looking forward to having a more successful time next season."

Wildcat's Head Coach Ryan Aldridge said of the signing: "It's great to have Jan back; he is a rock at the back. He is a quiet guy that leads in the locker room, not in too many words but in his professional attitude. He takes pride in all that he does, both on and off the ice and that is what makes him the player he is and the kind of player we want in Swindon."
The Wildcats will be announcing further signings in the not too distant future with all information being on www.swindonwildcats.com

EPL Weekly Roundup week 34 – w/e midnight Sunday1st May 2011 – The Iceman
Monday, 09 May 2011 17:51

A slightly busier week for news and with a few of the surprises you expect at this time of the year as teams and players jockey to fill the bench places. For instance, at the Bison Mindy Kieras, who had already agreed to re-sign for the club, changed his mind after playing for his native Lithuania, so presumably is now homeward bound. Although not necessarily if the rumours are to be believed that the Lightning having pencilled in his name.

One Lightning player who name is inked in rather than pencilled is Canadian player-coach Nick Poole who re-signed with the comment that he intended to return to more ice time player-coaching. Last season, following the snapping up of Blaz Emersic from the Jets which gave the Lightning five imports, Poole employed a controversial rotation policy, and while having defended his actions which allowed him to coach more often from the bench, presumably he will now revert to a four-import player-coach role. Or will he?

Someone with no role at the Lightning from now on is top British scorer Gary Clarke who has long been a regular face in Milton Keynes and who at aged 32 has joined ENL Chelmsford, a great catch from their point of view I would have thought.

The Jets kicked off their rebuild with a huge signing as forward Adam Calder put pen to paper for his first full season. Calder joined the club part way through last season and made an immediate impact ending the season as one of only four players who attained a two-point-plus game average, and the only non-Manchester player to do so. Following the announcement Coach Russell also dismissed the rumour Canadian Greg Chambers, whose name had been linked to fellow-Canadian Calder’s return, would be joining the Slough club.

However, while there has not been so much as a murmur from the Jets camp so far this closed season, they now made up for it with even more news like defenseman Paddy Ward, after six seasons, was leaving to travel the world while forward Dan Davies wanted to drop into the ENL to give him time to concentrate on his studies. Also on their way are two more Brits in the shape of forwards Michael Bowman, also after six seasons and, perhaps surprisingly, top British points, goals and assists scorer Slava Koulikov.

On the plus side British forward Tom Carlon who ironically put the Jets out of the play-offs with an overtime goal in the quarter-finals when he was playing for the Phantoms, has been signed up along with fellow Brit James Morgan who quit the Phantoms and the sport in January citing home and work commitments.

While talking about the Phantoms there is another club with something of an upheaval under way. British D-man Thomas Jeffery, for example, left to sign on with the Steeldogs. In his wake followed Top Ten D-man James Hutchinson who said he wanted to pursue his career in the Elite League, and although no team was mentioned it may well be with Hull with whom he has previously played. Also apparently on the move to an unnamed club is Canadian and former captain Dwayne Newman who it was announced will not be staying with the club for a fifth term although at 39 years of age there must be a question mark above his future anyway.

Also with a question mark above their future is the Elite League’s Newcastle Vipers. General Manager Jamie Longmuir finally closed up shop after a long struggle to find a permanent home ice rink. He ruled out any move to the EPL because of the so-called north-south divide which he said made travelling impractical regardless of the lower costs of running an ERPL team and the fact Manchester and Sheffield seem to manage it.

The blood letting at the Flames was cauterised this week with the announcement that David Longstaff had re-signed for a second year. Longstaff, it will be remembered was the lone EPL representative in the recent GB silver medal winning team in the Ukraine, so a serious re-signing if ever there was one.

So that’s for another week and although it may not be much in quantity, as my old grand-pappy used to say, ‘A prudent word is better than a speech.’
