Wildcats Bow Out In Final Flames Fixture
Sunday, 03 April 2011 19:37

Tonight the Swindon Wildcats took to the ice for the final time this season as they bowed out of the 2010/11 playoffs, after travelling south east to face the in-form Guildford Flames. Despite giving up a 6-2 deficit the previous evening, the Wildcats did not let the score line discourage them as they went on to open the scoring on away ice.
On the ten minute mark it was the in-form import Jonas Höög who first found the net as he saw his shot sneak over the line for the first of night. However two minutes later and Guildford’s David Longstaff then equalised off a face off draw, to see his shot beat netminder Hadfield and bring the scores all level. Just a minute later and Flames’ Matt Towe then made it two after following up a rebound from an initial great save.
Moments later the Wildcats then found themselves back in the game through James Knight when despite Guildford netminder Lee making left to right saves, Knight was able to tap the puck in over the sprawling netminder.

Into the second and the home side were quick to open the period when Rick Plant and import Melicherik both scored back to back goals within four minutes of the puck drop. At the 32nd minute the crowd were then in for a spectacle as Matt Towe put up his second of the night and a consequent fifth of the night. From here the ‘Cats changed netminders and Chris Doulgas took to between the pipes however two minutes later and the Flames really opened up and showed why they were able to finish 2nd in the league. Two further goals from Rempel and Hemmings were scored to create what looked to be a deficit too much for any opposing side.

The final period saw the home side take their foot off the gas however with a second goal from Melicherik five minutes in, the game seemed all but over. Neverless still kept to a ‘never say die’ mentality as import Jozef Liska scored a consolation third just a minute later. But to close out the game and wrap up this two legged battle between the two teams, forward Matt Towe collected his hat trick with a final ninth goal for the Flames and bring the game to a consequent end.
The defeat means that the Swindon Wildcats now end their season’s run with Guildford travelling to the Playoff finals to join the Manchester Phoenix, the MK Lightning and Peterborough Phantoms. The Wildcats now have the summer to collect themselves, build again and battle for next year’s league starting in September.

Final Score: Guildford 9 – 3 Swindon Wildcats

Swindon Playoff With Wildcat Pride
Saturday, 02 April 2011 21:18

Tonight the Swindon Wildcats had to face a setback in their playoff fixture to Coventry after losing out to the Guildford Flames on home ice. Within a great first period that saw the two teams battle hard, it was Guildford that broke the scoring after being given a 5 on 3 opportunity. After a build up around the net, Flames’ David Savage saw his slapshot beat netminder Hadfield and give the travelling side the lead.
However it was Swindon who would score next on a powerplay of their own way into the second period. Just over the 35th minute mark the crowd saw popular import Jonas Höög link up with defenseman Joe Baird to provide an opening home goal and give the team a well earned goal. The celebrations made it clear how important the game was as and how focused the ‘Cats were on finding that next goal. Although the goal looked to knock the Flames, Guildford’s David Longstaff one-timed shot shortly after was able to find the net for his sides’ second what looked to be a momentum stopping goal.
By the end of the second only the one goal could split to the two sides much like the first however the final twenty was to see the momentum go a different way.
The travelling sides’ Nathan Rempel was the first to find the net with just a minute gone in the third, after connecting with a tape to tape pass skating into the slot. With ten minutes gone Swindon were to strike back through Jonas Höög, scoring on a great individual effort to beat the netminder 5 hole on a breakaway opportunity. Five minutes on and the Flames would then strike back on away ice after scoring a fourth in the 49th minute. With Guildford’s Paul Dixon able to find the net from the tightest of angles for a top corner goal, it meant the Flames had doubled their lead with just ten minutes left on the clock and the challenge set for the ‘Cats.
Swindon showed real drive with the likes of Jonas Hoög and James Knight both striving forward from here however in the 54th minute, Guildford’s Milos Melicherik was deliver a blow that would see a three goal deficit sit on the board. His accurate shot in front of net found not only the post but also the net as Guildford celebrated a fifth goal to leave the scores at 5-2.
Having faced shots all night, ‘Cats netminder James Hadfield did well to hold the Swindon net however with three minutes left and a shot that left him wondering where the puck had landed, it lined in a tap in effort for the away sides’ Mat Towe who confirmed a sixth goal and a consequent lead going into tomorrow night’s game as the two meet once again in the second of the two legged fixture.
It was a tough night for Swindon who although created some good plays did face a defence well on form and did well against a side who have only lost once in their last 16 games. With nothing to lose tomorrow Swindon may well take a different strategy to the Flames tomorrow as the two clash on Guildford ice in a place for a final four spot to be played at Coventry.

Final Score: Swindon Wildcats 2 – 6 Guildford Flames
