EPL Roundup Week 29 – w/e midnight Sunday 3rd April 2011 – The Iceman
Wednesday, 06 April 2011 08:40

So that’s the end of the regular season and what a finish the Phantoms had with three wins and five hat-tricks over the last two weekends which firmly embedded the side in the middle of the table, so not bad for a new coach and a team with money problems. And let’s not forget the odd arrangement between the fans, Darius Lelenas and the club, which we may well see reproduced in the future.

At the top end of the Flames finished with a record-breaking eleven consecutive winning league games, which nicely bracketed the season with their amazing starting run.

At the other end of the scale table the Tigers announced their much-improved forward Scott McKenzie, who collected a bunch of end-of-season awards, had re-signed for next season.

Meanwhile, Bees GM Stuart Robinson said his club, ‘is bitterly disappointed with how the season has ended. ’But, on the bright side, added ‘There will definitely be a Bracknell Bees next season.’ But there may not definitely be a Jaroslav Cesky and Michal Pinc there because rumour has it the two are on the move, while Lucas Smulter, after four years at the Flames is rumoured to be returning to his old team.

Sam Bullas, the Wildcats’ forward who has been out with a broken ankle is hoping to make a return before the play-offs conclude. Having originally been ruled out for the season, he has now been cleared to start light training.

Definitely back in for the play-offs, though, are Coaches Andre Payette and Tony Hand. Both had been ruled out due to suspensions but the Phoenix appealed and the EPL Disciplinary Committee ruled all punishments were void to ‘enable the top teams to compete on an equal footing for the Coventry final.’

Well, yes, all well and good because in allowing Hand back onto the ice the ruling has reinstated Payette and, of course, both Steeldogs and Phoenix face each other in the quarter-finals. But, there are those who are not happy with the decision saying it makes a mockery of the discipline procedure and allows players to act as they see fit in the leagues final games, and, more cynically, that had it not been Hand involved in the appeal, the suspensions would have stood. When you consider the Andrew Sharp ban that was also-say overturned earlier in the season after a Phoenix so-called appeal, you can’t help wondering about the integrity of the committee.

However, while the Hand high-sticks call was seriously iffy with Wildcats Bauba pretty much running into the stick with his head won, you can’t help feeling the quarter-final games would be sadly lacking without messrs Payette and Hand. Meanwhile, following news of his reinstatement Coach Payette said, I don’t think Manchester are going to like playing us,’ adding ‘I will be having words with Mr Sharp again.’ So, more blood on the dance floor then.

Saturday and the quarter-finals kicked off with the expected Payette v Sharp tango at face-off and then when the serious hockey got under way the Phoenix settled in and just pulled away with the game peaking with the Canadian Steeldogs’ coach getting thrown out of tomorrow’s second leg. So a pretty normal game.

In Swindon some early imaginative reffing plunged the Wildcats into a five-on-three causing them to go a goal down from which they covered and held the Flames in check for two periods in a tight fast game which you wouldn’t have wanted to put money on. But in the third the pace and machine-like persistence of the Flames paid off giving them a four-goal buffer to take home.

In Guildford the following evening the pattern was similar in that by the half-way point things were equal at 2-apiece and then the Flames not so much as pulled away as charge away with Matt Towe picking up a hat-trick and the Wildcats their biggest defeat of the season at 9-3 and 15-5 on aggregate.

The Bison in Milton Keynes stepped onto the ice and almost immediately the floor fell away beneath them as they went three goals down in minutes. Adding to the mayhem Chris Wiggins did his party-piece and collected fourteen minutes in tips to spend in the box. Then, things not exactly quietened down but stabalised in that for half an hour things equalised but then just about when you star to fidget knowing you will be in the bar in three minutes Kubenko slotted in two quick goals and it was game on! However, the final period saw nothing more but the Bison recovered enough to go onto home ice just a goal down and seriously still in the chase.

The final quarter-final pairing saw the Phantoms take the lead at home against the Jets on a power-play and although the Jets recovered before the first break, the Phantoms were ahead again early in the second. It was still neck-and-neck until with just ten minutes to go the Jets not only equalised but six minutes later were two up, which is how it ended.

After the first leg it was always unlikely the Steeldogs and Wildcats would be able to claw back large deficits against superior teams, so not surprising they have fallen by the wayside. The way the Phantoms have been playing a two-goal hurdle is not an insurmountable challenge, but against the Jets on home ice? The Lightning, however, with just a goal to wipe out were in with a definite chance facing a mercurial Bison on home ice.

Wildcats Bow Out In Final Flames Fixture
Sunday, 03 April 2011 19:37

Tonight the Swindon Wildcats took to the ice for the final time this season as they bowed out of the 2010/11 playoffs, after travelling south east to face the in-form Guildford Flames. Despite giving up a 6-2 deficit the previous evening, the Wildcats did not let the score line discourage them as they went on to open the scoring on away ice.
On the ten minute mark it was the in-form import Jonas Höög who first found the net as he saw his shot sneak over the line for the first of night. However two minutes later and Guildford’s David Longstaff then equalised off a face off draw, to see his shot beat netminder Hadfield and bring the scores all level. Just a minute later and Flames’ Matt Towe then made it two after following up a rebound from an initial great save.
Moments later the Wildcats then found themselves back in the game through James Knight when despite Guildford netminder Lee making left to right saves, Knight was able to tap the puck in over the sprawling netminder.

Into the second and the home side were quick to open the period when Rick Plant and import Melicherik both scored back to back goals within four minutes of the puck drop. At the 32nd minute the crowd were then in for a spectacle as Matt Towe put up his second of the night and a consequent fifth of the night. From here the ‘Cats changed netminders and Chris Doulgas took to between the pipes however two minutes later and the Flames really opened up and showed why they were able to finish 2nd in the league. Two further goals from Rempel and Hemmings were scored to create what looked to be a deficit too much for any opposing side.

The final period saw the home side take their foot off the gas however with a second goal from Melicherik five minutes in, the game seemed all but over. Neverless still kept to a ‘never say die’ mentality as import Jozef Liska scored a consolation third just a minute later. But to close out the game and wrap up this two legged battle between the two teams, forward Matt Towe collected his hat trick with a final ninth goal for the Flames and bring the game to a consequent end.
The defeat means that the Swindon Wildcats now end their season’s run with Guildford travelling to the Playoff finals to join the Manchester Phoenix, the MK Lightning and Peterborough Phantoms. The Wildcats now have the summer to collect themselves, build again and battle for next year’s league starting in September.

Final Score: Guildford 9 – 3 Swindon Wildcats

Swindon Playoff With Wildcat Pride
Saturday, 02 April 2011 21:18

Tonight the Swindon Wildcats had to face a setback in their playoff fixture to Coventry after losing out to the Guildford Flames on home ice. Within a great first period that saw the two teams battle hard, it was Guildford that broke the scoring after being given a 5 on 3 opportunity. After a build up around the net, Flames’ David Savage saw his slapshot beat netminder Hadfield and give the travelling side the lead.
However it was Swindon who would score next on a powerplay of their own way into the second period. Just over the 35th minute mark the crowd saw popular import Jonas Höög link up with defenseman Joe Baird to provide an opening home goal and give the team a well earned goal. The celebrations made it clear how important the game was as and how focused the ‘Cats were on finding that next goal. Although the goal looked to knock the Flames, Guildford’s David Longstaff one-timed shot shortly after was able to find the net for his sides’ second what looked to be a momentum stopping goal.
By the end of the second only the one goal could split to the two sides much like the first however the final twenty was to see the momentum go a different way.
The travelling sides’ Nathan Rempel was the first to find the net with just a minute gone in the third, after connecting with a tape to tape pass skating into the slot. With ten minutes gone Swindon were to strike back through Jonas Höög, scoring on a great individual effort to beat the netminder 5 hole on a breakaway opportunity. Five minutes on and the Flames would then strike back on away ice after scoring a fourth in the 49th minute. With Guildford’s Paul Dixon able to find the net from the tightest of angles for a top corner goal, it meant the Flames had doubled their lead with just ten minutes left on the clock and the challenge set for the ‘Cats.
Swindon showed real drive with the likes of Jonas Hoög and James Knight both striving forward from here however in the 54th minute, Guildford’s Milos Melicherik was deliver a blow that would see a three goal deficit sit on the board. His accurate shot in front of net found not only the post but also the net as Guildford celebrated a fifth goal to leave the scores at 5-2.
Having faced shots all night, ‘Cats netminder James Hadfield did well to hold the Swindon net however with three minutes left and a shot that left him wondering where the puck had landed, it lined in a tap in effort for the away sides’ Mat Towe who confirmed a sixth goal and a consequent lead going into tomorrow night’s game as the two meet once again in the second of the two legged fixture.
It was a tough night for Swindon who although created some good plays did face a defence well on form and did well against a side who have only lost once in their last 16 games. With nothing to lose tomorrow Swindon may well take a different strategy to the Flames tomorrow as the two clash on Guildford ice in a place for a final four spot to be played at Coventry.

Final Score: Swindon Wildcats 2 – 6 Guildford Flames

Man of the Match: SWI – Höög / GUI – Longstaff
