Sam Zajac Signs With Wildcats

Swindon Wildcats are thrilled to announce the signing of 27-year-old British defenceman Sam Zajac from the Telford Tigers.

Sam is a player who has played at the highest level in British hockey having iced in over 200 EIHL games. Since returning to Telford at the beginning of the 2014 season Sam has posted 127 points in 153 games from defence. His puck moving abilities has seen him rise to one of the top British defencemen in Britain and he arrives to Swindon on the back of a league championship with Telford the year before.

Speaking about this big arrival Player Coach Aaron Nell said:

“This is probably the biggest signing I’ve made as a coach, to bring in a new player to the club like Sam is huge. When we knew, Stevie (Lyle) wasn’t coming back we knew we had to get a top British player to fill in that gap. Sam was our top target and we’re very happy he’s decided to come to Swindon. He’s going to be a fan favourite and a hugely important player for the team.

Sam can do it all and he was one of the top defencemen in the EPL last season. He’s going to be one of, if not our most, important player and we’re delighted he’s come here. Sam will add a lot of offence from the back end and that is something we’ve been looking at doing. He’s a great guy who plays with his heart on his sleeve and he’s going to be good in the locker room. Sam knows a couple of our players and everyone I’ve spoken to about him has given me good reports. He’s going to make our team a lot better and I can’t wait to start working with him”.

Having decided to make the switch to Wiltshire, Sam had the following message for his new fan base.

"I'm delighted to be a part of the Wildcats for the upcoming season.

After a summer that has seen so much upheaval across the British leagues I felt it was important to let the dust settle and take stock before making a decision on where to play this season, but after meeting Aaron and speaking to him at length about his plans for Swindon, and hearing a glowing reference from ex-teammate Phil Hill, it was an easy decision.

It's a club in almost a unique position in the UK with so much young talent coming through and I'm excited to help the club take that next step and win some trophies."
