Clan D-Man Joins Wildcats

Elite League defender arrives at Wildcats

34-year old Canadian Kenton Smith has agreed terms with the Swindon Wildcats and will ice for the club in the 2014-15 English Premier Ice Hockey League campaign.

The player, who departed the Elite League Braehead Clan in order to spend more time with his family in Cardiff, completes head coach Ryan Aldridge’s import list ahead of the new season and the experienced D-Man will join Alex Symonds, Steve Whitfield and Shane Moore on the ‘Cats blueline, with one further player expected to join them before the opening puck of the season is dropped.

Smith’s departure from the Clan’s is most certainly a massive gain for the Wildcats and head coach Aldridge acted as quickly as possible to secure his man.

“When a player of Kenton’s quality becomes available, you have to act and he’s a big, big signing for us.

“He comes to the club with a wealth of experience and is a guy that can quarterback our power play,” the head coach said on confirming the deal.

Indeed, the 5’11” player has a wealth of experience in the Western Hockey League, American Hockey League and the East Coast Hockey League with 13 consecutive seasons under his belt prior to arriving in Great Britain where he spent a year in the Elite League before heading to Italy and a season with Valpellice in Serie A1, the countries top division.

He returned to the Elite League in 2010 where he teamed up with the Cardiff Devils and two of the next three seasons as an Alternate Captain, before heading north of the boarder, joining the Clan for the 2013-14 campaign.

Aldridge concluded:  “He is known as a leader both off and on the ice and he will be an exciting player to watch.

“I have spoken to a lot of players and coaches about him and have only ever heard great things and I’m happy with the way the team is shaping up.”

Smith’s 2013-14 Braehead Clan stats:  P: 41  |  G: 5  |  A: 9  |  Pts: 14
