Wildcats Secure Zalesak

Forward line gets even stronger

Stevie Lyle continued to deliver on his statement of intent ahead of his first season in charge of the Swindon Wildcats by securing a second top signing within a week with the capture of former Slovakian International, Miroslav Zalesak.

The Welshman has enjoyed his most productive week to date as Wildcats coach after adding Finn Sami Ryhänen to his roster on Monday morning and completes a hectic week at the Swindon Ice Arena with the signing of another hugely experienced import forward.

“Miroslav is another top signing for us,” Lyle said after announcing the news.

“He’s got the desire to do well and shares the clubs ambition to push forwards and with attitude and commitment, he will be a real leader on and off the ice.

“His attributes make him exactly the sort of player that we are looking to bring to the club.”

The 6’ 1” former NHL player iced for Ertis Pavlodar (who play in the Kazakhstan Hockey Championship, the top level of ice hockey in Kazakhstan) last season before ending the campaign with a third spell in the Slovak Extraliga (top league in Slovakia) with HK 36 Skalica.

The 35-year old forward began his career with HC Nitra U18s back in the 1995-96 season and progressed to their senior team two seasons later when he also earned his first International caps at U18s level.

In 1998-99, he moved to Quebec and played for the Drummondville Voltigeurs before return to HC Nitra and also making the step up to the U20s International roster.  He then stepped up to the AHL as part of the  Kentucky Thoroughblades side in time for the 2000-01 campaign.

The following year saw him swap clubs to join the Cleveland Barons and in 2002-03, he secured a dream move to the San Jose Sharks of the NHL.

A return to his homeland came around in 2004-05 when he played his first spell with HK 36 Skalica, a season that also saw him ice in the Czech Republic with HC Litvinov before he moved to Sweden to play for Södertälje SK the following year (2005-06) which also saw him break in to the senior Slovakian team.

In the following seven seasons (between 2006-13), Zalesak went on to feature for  HC Trinec (Czech),  HK 36 Skalica (for a three season second spell), HC Kosice (both in Slovakia) and  KLH Chomutov (Czech) before he headed to Kazakhstan.

Previously, the player has picked up a Kazakhstan Champion medal with Ertis Pavlodar (2013-14) and prior to this, built up a strong reputation winning a Slovakian Extraliga Champion medal as well as the award for Most Points (64) and he was also listed in the All Star team (during the 2010-11 season) while playing for  HK 36 Skalica.

Zalesak becomes the first Slovakian to ice for the club in seven years, and the ninth in franchise history.
