Cats Down Phoenix

Swindon Wildcats 5 Manchester Phoenix 3

Swindon Wildcats will be left pleased with their Saturday efforts after running out 5-3 winners over the Manchester Phoenix at the Swindon Ice Arena, writes Total Swindon blogger Ben Callaghan.

Cats were at full strength for the first time this season, with Adam Harding returning from a shoulder injury.

Swindon started the game strongly, as chances at both ends of the ice were not converted, but they found their opening goal from an unlikely source. Matt Selby jumped in on the play and shot through the legs of Steve Fone in the Phoenix net, with Aaron Nell and Miroslav Zalesak getting assists. With only 14 seconds left in the period Ben Wood pounced on a loose puck and tied the game up, despite protests from the Cats players.

The second period started poorly for Cats as after 14 seconds Phoenix took the lead. Nico Aaltonen sped down the left wing and fired into the top corner past Stevie Lyle. Some good work along the boards saw Nell get his first of the evening, converting a shot from the slot past Fone.

Later in the period Swindon retook the lead when Corey McEwen hammered home a rebound into a gaping net. Things got even better for Swindon and particular Michael Stratford. The Swindon junior was fed the puck after some good fore-checking from Jan Kostal, and Stratford picked his spot and scored his first EPIHL goal for the Cats.

The third period saw just the one Cats goal. A poor turnover from Manchester saw Sami Ryhanen pick up the puck and link up well Tomasz Malasinski. The Polish international waited for the ideal chance to shoot before lifting the puck into the roof of the net. A late consolation goal for the Phoenix saw James Archer scramble the puck over the line for a goal on his 500th game in the EPIHL.

The Wildcats will be happy with the work all over the ice and travel down the M4 to Guildford tomorrow to take on the Flames for the first time this season.
