'Cats Come Close In Pre-Season Clash

Bees take the honey in first game

Last Saturday evening the Swindon Wildcats suffered their first pre-season defeat as they fell short to the visiting Bracknell Bees.

After a fiery first period between the two sides, it was to be Bracknell that would draw first blood and through a powerplay chance.  The extra man would give the Bees their chance to play the puck towards the wing and eventually in front of net for a tap in courtesy of forward Ryan Watt.  With emotions running high come the end of the period, the away side would see themselves handed two game mis-conducts as both sides headed off after twenty minutes of play.

It took just seconds into the middle period for the 'Cats to capitalise on this advantage, as a 5 on 3 powerplay gave Aaron Nell his first from a redirect in front of goal.

A close affair between the two sides then saw its next goal, this time with Bees' previous scorer Watt claiming his second on a powerplay slapshot from the back post.

Two then became three moments later, as a slapshot from distance would beat Stevie Lyle and for the away sides' Jan Bendik to claim his first.  Swindon were not to panic from here and after several chances on the visiting net, Wildcat defenseman Stevie Whitfield finally saw his backhand beat Tom Annetts and bring the home side within one.

Despite a dominant third period, the 'Cats could do everything but score as Annetts proved on several occasions why he is his sides' first choice netminder.

With the final buzzer came the final score and all but confirmed Swindon's first defeat in this exhibition fixture.

The Swindon Wildcats will take to home ice again next Saturday as they get their season underway to host the Chelmsford Chieftains in a new look cup fixture.
