Swindon Bow Out Just Short

The Swindon Wildcats had to see their 2014/15 season come to an end last Sunday evening, after the side would fall just short of a potential Playoff Finals spot in Coventry. Having to face the hosting Peterborough Phantoms and from a goal behind from the previous evening, Swindon did all they can but to suffer a late goal for a final 2-1 game.

Despite the eventual 6-4 aggregate loss, the evening began well for Swindon with several chances at the Phantoms end. However it would be the hosts who would net first, after import Donatas Kumeliauskas saw his shot saved by netminder Stevie Lyle before forward Luke Ferrara would tap in the rebound.

The Phantoms would continue to amount the pressure but when Swindon’s Lee Richardson would finish after a melee in front of goal, the scores were soon back to even.

This meant for a tied game and one that would be taken into the second period. The Wildcats would find some good traction after the restart and despite testing netminder Janis Auzins, the score would hold out.

The home side would respond with chances of their own however after forty of minutes of play, both sides would look to cancel themselves out.

The shots would continue to flow well into the third period and with such a tight score, the tension would continue to rise with it. However after striking the the post at the Phantoms end, Swindon would then see Peterborough’s Latvian import Edgars Debris score at the other end to find what would be a crucial second goal.

The Wildcats would persist to find an equaliser into the dying minutes but with the hosts holding onto their lead, Swindon could do all but fall the wrong side of a final 2-1 scoreline come the game’s end.

A tough away result meant the Swindon Wildcats were denied a place at the Playoff Finals weekend and will consequently see their 2014/15 season come to an disappointing end. Being the final fixture of the season means long time servant to the club, coach Ryan Aldridge, will also see his last game over looking the WIldcats before moving on next year. Aldridge will now pass the reigns onto Stevie Lyle who will take up the position for the 2015/16 season and undoubtedly look to improve on what will still be looked on as an impressive season by the club.

Final Score: Peterborough Phantoms 2 - 1 Swindon Wildcats
