NIHL Wildcats Round Up

Catch up with all the news from the NIHL Wildcats.

The NIHL Wildcats rounded off their 2014-15 season with a disappointing 2-6 defeat at the hands of the Championship chasing Wightlink Tigers here at the Swindon Ice Arena last Sunday evening (March 22nd), but player coach Dan Sullivan has learned a great deal from his first year in charge.

“It was a steep learning curve, but one that I massively enjoyed.” he said after the final game.

“The results weren’t what we’d hoped for, but we’ve got a platform to build on now and I’m looking forward to having a short break, before sinking my teeth back in to the challenge of next season.

“We’ve had a great group of guys this year, our average age was only around the 21-22 years old mark, but the boys have kept their heads high through a difficult season and everyone has stuck together.

“I’d like to thank the team for making this season as enjoyable as possible.”

Indeed, finishing bottom of both the league and cup tables was perhaps not what the coach had in mind when he took over the role, but having been thrown in at the deep end, the 25-year old more than enjoyed the learning curve.

“It was certainly tough, but I’ve gained a lot of new experiences and I’ve developed ideas on how to do things better in the future,” he continued.

“Although this season has only just finished, I’m already looking forward to the trials and being able to announce who we’ll have on the roster for the challenge that the 2015-16 season will bring.

“On behalf of the team, I’d like to thank everyone who turned out to any of our games this year, your support was very much appreciated and we hope you can join us again next season.”

Meanwhile, the result against the Wildcats means that the Tigers will finish their season in fourth place as despite having two games in hand, they’re too far behind the third placed Cardiff Satan’s, who themselves will be hoping to finish as runners up as they have an exciting finish which will go a long way to deciding the top three places, with the Basingstoke Buffalo and Bristol Pitbulls still to come.

Last weekend also saw the 2015 NIHL South Division 2 Cup Finals Weekend held at Oxford Ice Rink, which resulted with the Slough Jets being crowned as the 2015 NIHL South Division 2 Cup Champions with a 7-2 win over the Buffalo.

Goals from Liam Underdown, Joshua and brother, Ben Ealey-Newman, Brandon Miles and two from Conor Redmond were more than enough to see the NIHL2 East Champions down the Buffalo in the Sunday final, while Saturday saw them through with a 4-3 sudden death overtime win against the Chelmsford Chieftains, while the Buffalo had defeated the Peterborough Islanders 4-2.
