NIHL NEWS: Countdown To D1 Playoff Weekend

Dumfries hosts playoff weekend.

The line up for the NIHL Moralee Division 1 Playoff Finals was confirmed last weekend when Sheffield Spartans defeated Sutton Sting in the final regular season game to secure the fourth and final ticket to the end of season showdown.

The Finals are at Dumfries Ice Bowl on 11th and 12th April, with two semi finals on the Saturday and the Grand Final on the Sunday.

League Champions Blackburn Hawks will face Sheffield Spartans in Saturday's first semi final at 1pm, while Billingham Stars play Solway Sharks at 5pm.

For Hawks, Stars and Sharks it is their second straight appearance at the weekend, while Sheffield are making their first appearance in the Finals since this weekend format was adopted.

The Playoff Final is on Sunday at 2pm, moved forward from the original time of 3pm to avoid a clash with Queen of the South FC who play next door to the Ice Bowl.

Pro Hockey News in association with EIHA will be presenting their NIHL North awards on the Saturday evening in a ceremony in the Ice Bowl bar.  Clubs and media have been voting for their Player of the Year, Young Player of the Year and Coach of the Year while supporters have been able to vote online for their Fans Favourite – a new category this year.

The shortlists have been published by Pro Hockey News ahead of the event.

Player of the Year: Richard Bentham (Solway Sharks), Adam Brittle (Blackburn Hawks), Luke Brittle (Blackburn Hawks).

Young Player of the Year: Callum Queenan (Whitley Warriors), Ben Richards (Whitley Warriors), Duncan Speirs (Solway Sharks).

Coach of the Year: Matt Darlow (Sutton Sting), Jared Owen (Blackburn Hawks), Martin White (Sheffield Spartans).

Fans Favourite: Chris Arnone (Blackburn Hawks), Michael Elder (Billingham Stars), Struan Tonnar (Solway Sharks).

Tickets for the Playoff Weekend are still available from the Midsteeple Box Office 01387 253 383 or online at Ticketweb priced at £20 for all three games.  (U16 tickets are free.  Booking fees may apply).  Supporters booking online should state the name of their club when booking.

NIHL North Chairman Charles Dacres said: "This promises to be an exciting climax to this year's campaign, where six of the seven teams could have made the playoffs.

"We are grateful to Dumfries & Galloway Council and the Ice Bowl for hosting our Finals and for their support of ice hockey."
