NIHL Cats To Play With Fire

Sunday April 3, 2016 @ 6pm

The NIHL Wildcats round off their South Division 2 (West) campaign this coming Sunday evening, with a tough road trip to the new league champions, Cardiff Fire.

While the result will do nothing to change the final league standings for either club, both sets of players will be looking to produce positive displays ahead of their respective outings in the Cup Finals Weekend (Wildcats) and Playoff Semi Finals (Fire) which are rounding off the current season.

Focus and character will be the key ingredients during the sides final league game of the season and although sights may already be drifting to their cup semi-final in Alexandra Palace on April 9, it will be the job of player-coach Dan Sullivan to keep his player’s minds, firmly on the task in hand.

Despite being eleven points adrift of their hosts, Sullivan will want to avoid a series white-wash at the hands of the Welsh side, but with successive home defeats of 3-8 and 2-6 alongside a previous road trip defeat of 5-1, the odds look stacked against the visitors and it will need the 'Cats to be on top of their game.

"They [Cardiff Fire] don’t often have a dip and when they do, they have the characters in their squad to turn it around.

“Having clinched the title last weekend with a massive 16-nil shutout over the [Wightlink] Tigers, they have shown what they’re capable of and we’re expecting a very tough game,” Sullivan said ahead of the weekend.

"We’ll be looking for our boys to continue our form over from the Buffalo win [8-3 in the final home game of the season] but we’ll have to dig in as they are a very tough side to beat.”

As you’d expect, any side that runs away with the league title would have a number of key players in their roster and the Fire are no different.  While Jordan Powell may be top of the sides goal scoring charts with 13 (and 3 assists), fellow forward Robert Sedlak is currently eclipsing him with a superior points total - with 6 goals and 11 assists so far.
